Ucluelet is not quite as remote a fishing destination as you may think. In fact we are only about 4 hours from Victoria, 5 1/2 hours from Vancouver BC, or 8 hours from Seattle. Some different travel options are discussed below depending on where your are coming from and which route you decide upon. Besides having arguably the best Salmon fishing in the world, we are easy drive to and have less fishing pressure than "remote fly-in" resorts. Many fishing resorts have 5 or 10 other lodges within a few minutes, so you can have 100 or more boats fishing the same area. Not so in Ucluelet.
The most usual method of transport to get to the fishing grounds off Ucluelets west coast is in most cases less than a days drive. For Instance if you are travelling from anywhere in the lower mainland just hop onto one of the two ferry services BC ferries has to offer, Horshoe bay or Tsawwason, and drive North from either ferry terminal and once you get to Qualicum look for the exit that puts you on Highway 4 to Port Alberni. Follow the road signs and after passing thru Port Alberni you will find yourself at a T junction down by the river, turn right and continue on for approx 1.5 hours, at this point you will arrive at another T intersection, turn left (left for Ucluelet, right for Tofino) and you will find yourself in Ucluelet after a short 8 km drive. Now you are ready to head out fishing. Look for the Docks and the big white ship also on your left, the Inner Boat basin is just beyond that. It really is that simple.
If you choose to fly from Edmonton or Calgary for example, West Jet flies direct to Comox on Vancouver Island, and then it is approximately a 3 hour drive to the docks to start you fishing adventure. Just hop onto the inland island highway and get yourself to Port Alberni and follow the driving instructions above. If you a flying from another destination in Alberta or further east from Montreal for example, any commercial carrier will fly into Vancouver and from there you can hop on a flight to Comox or Nanaimo on Vancouver Island or take one of two ferry services provided by BC ferries at either the Tsawwason or Horshoe bay terminal. Rental cars are available at both the Comox or Nanaimo air ports, as well rental cars are available at Vancouver International Airport. Air Canada will fly into Nanaimo on Vancouver Island.
If your holiday adventure puts you at the Vancouver International airport, you can hop on a flight to either Nanaimo or Comox, rent a car, and follow the driving directions above, or if you are travelling from just south of the Border you can take the Port Angeles ferry to Victoria and get on the Highway and follow the driving directions above, it takes about 1.5 hours longer to drive from Victoria than it does from either Comox or Nanaimo. It may be worth the time to check and see what the cost are to fly into one of the large airports on Vancouver Island Victoria, Comox, or Nanaimo. You may be able to save some time and money depending on what airline you are flying with. You can fly direct from San Francisco to Victoria through United Airlines for example.
